Dave,

Steve Tedder here from Sydney Australia, I went to Kona to support my great friend Scott Wood from Oz. It was THAT day, I became 'bitten' by the bug. The HEAT that day was unbelievable. I went for a 60km ride on the course the day before, nearly ended up in the roughh 'black stuff' a number of times. Anyway, your earn't your stripes that day. My Ironman career, although shortlived started a few years later......

I did the race that year and was in first place in my age group (50-54) until 17 miles into the run when the effects of heat and pace got to me. I walked through the aid stations, trying to get enough fluid in me to keep me going. Roger Alexander passed me somewhere around mile 17 but I hung on long enough to get second. I have great memories of that day but also realize I was lucky to survive the conditions. Several good athletes in my age group didn't make it - too much heat and not enough cloud cover.
