Hi - to clarify Triathlete Magazines choice of title, please note that this article was based as a Q&A and the question does not appear above.Yes - I totally agree that a Vegan/Vegetarian diet can be complete nutritionally - and those essential nutrients can come from plants. The point being made is that (like everyone) it takes a concerted effort to achieve this - and in many cases Vegan/Vegetarians are more diligent than the general population. Variety is the key to any diet.
Thanks!
Pip

I find that I perform much better since I became vegan, my sleep is better, therefore my recovery is much more improved. Also I eat "lighter" meals which are full of nutritional value and keep my energy levels much higher than ever before. in fact I am surprised when people question whether I feel weak, I am much stronger than I have ever been and lighter at the same time.

Vegan is a great way of providing to yourself, I actually read about Mike Tyson "The Baddest Man on the Planet" who became vegan less than one year ago and has since lost 130lbs and is getting back into the best shape of his life with equal strength.

Great article. Look forward to the next one.

That's ridiculous. Just because the author used this phrase it doesn't mean it's proof of whether a vegetarian diet is healthy or not. If that were the case, to negate this all someone would have to do is publish an article with an opposite phrase.

Being a vegan athlete is simple and shouldn't be viewed as difficult or a hindrance but as a benefit. Scott Jurek, the worlds greatest ultra runner, is a Vegan and he seems to be doing just fine. Just like any diet, be it carnist or vegan, you should be sure to eat a diverse amount of whole foods. Just as being vegan and eating nothing but pasta isn't healthy, neither is being a carnist and eating just steak each day.

And the issue of vegans missing out on iron, calcium, zinc, riboflavin, and vitamin B12 is clearly coming from someone who doesn't know much about plants. Everything listed above is in plants and in large amounts, except for B12 which is actually found in dirt. Animals have it from eating the dirt on plants, and vegans can get it though the same as well as nutritional yeast which is a common ingredient in vegan foods. And the amount of B12 needed is extremely small, so concerning yourself with it isn't something you should waste your time on.

I'm vegan, I run marathons and do Ironman distance tri's, and I've had no problems "accomplishing the feat".

The fact that there's a post about "Accomplishing the feat" should tell you that vegetarianism is not the way humans were meant to be (outside of the rare allergies or other medical conditions).
