This month’s Super Sprint Triathlon Grand Prix is bringing together an exciting group of triathlon stars in Oceanside, Calif. to race for a prize purse totaling $20,000.

The event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 31 with the professionals taking on a 300m swim, a 5-mile bike, and a 1.5-mile run – twice. Although many athletes have gone into off-season hiding, several will break out their race kits to take part in this event. Participants include Chris McCormack, Matt Reed, Jarrod Shoemaker, Richie Cunningham, Filip Ospaly, Paul Amey, Sam Warriner, Sarah McLarty and Alicia Kaye.

This format of triathlon racing originated in Australia, and recently crowned Ironman World Champion Chris McCormack of Australia will be a part of the race:

“The speed of competition is what makes this so amazing. This race will be fast and exciting. I grew up on this stuff and I love it! I’m not sure I will have the speed in my legs like the old days, but it’s going to be fun.”

The multiple transitions and fast-paced nature of the event make for a spectator-friendly event, something that triathlon is not necessarily known for. The race will kick off on Oct. 31 with the women taking on the first swim leg at 11 a.m. PDT and the men following at 1 p.m. PDT. If successful, the race format may become a series for 2011.
