France’s Sudrie Sylvain and Great Britain’s Leanda Cave won today’s Ironman 70.3 Miami race today in Miami, Florida. Sylvain turned in a solid swim and bike, and then held off a fast-running Paul Amey to take the win. Cave exited the swim in first position and held her lead to the finish line. Nearly 3,000 athletes participated in the inaugural event.

Sudrie led the men out of the swim with a time of 28:07. Although American Ethan Brown exited right on his heels, the rest of the field struggled. With the chase pack well behind him, Sudrie hammered the 56-mile bike leg in 2:09:36 to hold his lead heading into T2. Argentina’s Oscar Galindez was the only athlete to turn in a bike time faster than Sudrie, and Galindez headed onto the run in second position. Sudrie backed his solid swim and bike with a 1:19:46 half marathon to take the victory in just over four hours. Amey exited the bike in fifth position and used a 1:17:28 half marathon to run his way to second. Galindez held onto third.

Like Sudrie, Cave used a fast swim to set the pace for her race. Germany’s Nina Kraft and the United States’ Kelly Williamson also turned in strong swim times and were the only women who kept Cave within their sights. The gap between Cave and her competition only grew the rest of the day. As Cave rode a 2:19:10 bike split, Kraft and Williamson struggled to keep pace.  At some point during the 56 miles Williamson crashed on her bike. Although she was able to continue to the finish line, the crash affected both her bike and run splits. Cave went on to run a 1:28:34 half marathon, giving her the fastest swim, bike and run splits on the day. The dominating performance gave her the victory in 4:21:21. Canada’s Angela Naeth earned second nearly nine minutes later, with Kraft claiming the final podium spot.
