Two-time Ultraman champion Jonas Colting of Sweden extended his lead on day two of the Ultraman World Championships, while 2009 Ultraman Canada champ Amber Monforte of the United States turned in a stellar bike split to overtake fellow American Hillary Biscay for the lead in the women’s race.

Colting cycled the 171.4 miles in a total time of 7:24:03, giving him an overall time of 14:52:47 and a 23-minute lead over newcomer Slater Fletcher of the United States. Mike Le Roux sits in third.

Monforte passed day one leader Biscay by turning in an amazing 7:57:58 bike split. The next fastest female on the bike was six-time champion Shanna Armstrong of the United States in 8:22:18. Biscay’s strong performance on day one gave her the second position in the overall standings, with Armstrong sitting in third.

Athletes will take on the final leg of the race on Sunday. The day will consist of a double marathon (52.4 miles), with athletes starting south of Hawi and making their way into Kona.

Competitor magazine’s Bob Babbitt is taking in all of the action on the Big Island and provides these fun news and notes from the course:

- Mike Rouse from K-Swiss is racing with his wife Kim Rouse. In the second day at about 100km into the bike, Mike’s support crew met him with a hot dog, Fritos and a Dr. Pepper. A support team member was wearing a hot dog hat and sporting a Fritos shirt.

- On day one Jonas Colting said the wind was so bad on the bike for a number of miles that he couldn’t take his hands off the bars to drink or shift gears.

- Jonas’ brother Frederik, who is a few years younger than Jonas, says the two of them have a caveman workout that they do back home in Sweden. They wear Vibram Five Finger shoes, take some rope and a sledgehammer with them and spend about 90 minutes in the forest hitting trees with the sledgehammer, dragging tree stumps with the ropes and making their way through a high intensity workout.

- How tough was the wind? Hillary Biscay said that on day one there was a downhill section where she was in the small chain ring going 11 mph while pushing 200 watts.

- In the race is Cory Foulk from the Big Island. Cory has had a hip replacement and has come back to do multiple ultra and Ironman events. In the past two years he has completed the Ironman World Championships on a fixed gear bike, and in the late 1990′s he completed the Kona race on a 60-pound Schwinn Typhoon Cruiser bike… and he rode barefoot!
