One of Great Britain’s top ITU triathletes has announced his retirement from the sport after deciding to concentrate on his studies rather than compete for a place at the London Olympics.

Olly Freeman was a regular member of the British team for ITU World Championship Series events over the past couple of years and had been expected to be among the contenders for one of the three 2012 Olympic spots.

The 25-year-old has decided to take up a place at Cambridge University to study computer science in September.

“My career has been amazing, but there are so many other things I want to do,” he said. “It may seem strange with 2012 so close, but every athlete knows they will retire at some point and I have been considering this for some time now.”
