Ironman Mallorca 70.3 Preview

The inaugural Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2011. This event will also serve as a qualifying race for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. The host city of Alcudia is located in the north of the island and offers athletes a swim in Alcudia Bay, followed by a hilly bike course and flat run.

More than 1,800 athletes from 47 countries have descended upon this island in the Mediterranean to compete in the half iron distance. The pro field is stacked, as many professional European triathletes will use this race to accumulate Kona points due to its close proximity to their home training grounds and the challenging bike course. Eyes will be on Andreas Raelert for the win, but he will be challenged by Faris Al-Sultan, team founder and the leader of Team Abu Dhabi Triathlon. On the women’s side, Hungarian Erika Csomor is a favorite. Csomor is a long-distance veteran with wins in both the Ironman and half iron distances and is a seven-time winner of the Powerman Duathlon World Championships Zofingen.
