June 23 is Olympic Day, celebrated by more than 160 countries. It was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894. The purpose of today is to celebrate and promote fitness and well-being.
In honor of today, a number of events are taking place. The International Olympic Committee hosted the Women Sport Awards ceremony in Lausanne, Switzerland to recognize women who have made an outstanding effort to enhance the participation, development and involvement of women and young girls in sports.
In Colorado Springs, Colo., home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center, a week-long celebration of activities are planned. Today the city is hosting 400 youth at an Olympic-themed field day event with Olympians and resident athletes from the training center.
Also happening today, thousands are participating in Olympic Day runs all over the world.
