The best amateur triathletes in the country will battle it out in Burlington next month.
More than 2,500 of the nation’s top amateur triathletes will be in action Saturday, Aug. 20 at the USA Triathlon Age Group and Sprint National Championships, presented by Subway and People’s United Bank, which will be contested in Burlington, Vt., for the first time.
Burlington is assured of hosting the largest USA Triathlon-owned national championship event in the organization’s history. Held each year since 1983, Age Group Nationals sold out in record time and for just the second time ever earlier this month. A USA Triathlon-owned national championship event for the second straight year, Sprint Nationals registration also reached capacity.
National titles will be up for grabs in 28 age groups. The Olympic-distance age group event consists of a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run course, while the sprint event is comprised of a 750m swim, a 20k bike and a 5k run.
Action will begin with Age Group Nationals at 7:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park, followed by Sprint Nationals at 12:30 p.m. Visit usatriathlon.org for a complete schedule of events.
The competitors in both events are among the best amateur triathletes in the country, with many having garnered numerous USA Triathlon All-America honors, national championships and world titles. They will travel to Burlington from all 50 states and the District of Columbia after meeting qualification standards at USA Triathlon-sanctioned qualifying events throughout the 2011 season.
