Docherty Wins Ironman 70.3 Panamá, Armstrong Finishes Second

New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty showed once again that ITU athletes can translate speed to the half-Ironman, earning a victory in his Ironman 70.3 debut (he did compete in a half-iron distance race 12 years ago) at Ironman 70.3 Panamá. His 1:12:50 half marathon gave him the 3:50:13 win. American Lance Armstrong grabbed much of the pre-race attention and lived up to the hype, finishing second. The seven-time Tour de France winner appeared to hold back on the bike and led most of the run, crossing the line just 42 seconds behind Docherty. Australia’s Richie Cunningham rounded out the podium thanks to a fast run. Denmark’s Rasmus Henning finished fourth.
