Fresh off a decisive victory two weeks ago at Ironman 70.3 California in Oceanside, three-time Xterra world champion Melanie McQuaid is pumped for the start of the Xterra season, which will be kicked off this weekend at the Xterra West Championship at the Lake Las Vegas resort in Nevada. We had a quick chat with McQuaid before the race.
Triathlete.com: How are you feeling heading into the race—do you feel pretty recovered from Oceanside?
McQuaid: It took a long time recover after freezing my butt off at that race—a surprisingly long time. I also decided to get sick so that didn’t help. But I am pretty excited about the first Xterra of the year, so I plan to come out swinging no matter where I am at.
Triathlete.com: With your recent success at road triathlon, have you given any more thought to switching over to road?
McQuaid: I think I have already switched to road: one-third of the time. The other two-thirds are split between Xterra and multi-day mountain bike races.
Triathlete.com: Who do you see winning the men’s race this weekend?
McQuaid: Josiah [Middaugh] is on a massive upward trajectory every season. He’s my pick.
Triathlete.com: What do you like about the Vegas course?
McQuaid: The fact it is in Las Vegas mostly. [I’m] not sure it is the most overwhelming mountain biking experience honestly, but it is a fun trip to come here.
Triathlete.com: What do you think of more road triathletes giving Xterra a try?
McQuaid: I think it is great. Xterra is the most fun triathlon there is. I’m not sure what took them so long.
