Clayton Fettell and Magali Tisseyre win the 11th edition of New Hampshire’s Mooseman 70.3.
Mooseman champs Maxim Kriat and Lesley Paterson returned to defend their titles against a stacked field, including Clayton Fettell and Karl Bordine on the men’s side and Magali Tisseyre and Mary Beth Ellis on the women’s. The pros were competing for $15,000 and IM and IM 70.3 world championship qualification points. The 1,100 age groupers competed for 30 slots to the IM 70.3 world championships.
The 2011 70.3 Port Macquarie champ Clayton Fettell proved untouchable right from the start, following up a 23:05 swim with a 2:18:33 bike on the hilly course. Kriat exited the water more than two minutes back, but struggled on the bike, never coming close to catching Fettell, who ran a 1:16:11 half marathon to cinch the Mooseman title in 4:00:10, more than 13 minutes ahead of second place finisher Kriat. Carl Bordine rounded out the podium in third.
Mary Beth Ellis led the women out of the swim in 24:48. But her nearly two-minute lead over Tisseyre shrank a bit on the bike when Tisseyre posted the fastest female bike split of the day in 2:40:41. So the women’s race all came down to the run, and Tisseyre proved to be the better runner at this race, crossing the finish line in first in 4:32:40. Ellis came in second, while Paterson rounded out the podium in third.
