Simon Whitfield has made it to the final round of Canada’s contest to name its flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
CBC Sports created a bracket with 16 athletes, eight men and eight women, and over the last two weeks has asked people to vote in a different showdown each day. Whitfield beat out tennis player Daniel Nestor, then kayaker Adam van Koeverden and finally yesterday show jumper Ian Millar. Yesterday’s win over Millar didn’t come easy.
Athletes from around the triathlon community used social media to try to encourage others to vote for Whitfield in the race against Millar. Ultimately professional triathletes like Jordan Rapp, Hunter Kemper, Greg Bennett, Terenzo Bozzone and Lance Armstrong, and even NBA all star Steve Nash, chimed in on Twitter in an effort to help Whitfield nab the victory.
Throughout the evening the vote went back and forth, and after a reported 29,353 votes it was Whitfield who came out on top by the slim margin of 11 votes.
Whitfield will next face off against either cyclist Clara Hughes or mountain biker Catharine Pendrel for the top spot.
