Update: Julie Dibens Back To Swimming, Cycling

Back in March, Julie Dibens reported that she would be out for six months after multiple knee and foot surgeries. Six weeks ago, she got rid of her knee brace and spent a lot of time working what she could in the gym and zooming around on a new red scooter.

Now, three months since the surgery, she’s officially done with the crutches and says she’s back swimming in the pool and has been biking pretty much normally for about a month. “I started indoors with some gentle cycling, and now I’m back outside doing some long rides,” Dibens says. She’s even back to riding with her partner-in-crime Mirinda Carfrae, who recently tweeted about Dibens’ comeback fitness: “One day I’d like to see pain on @juliedibens face when I’m riding with her. That day wasn’t today.”

Dibens is looking into fall cycling races because she still has more than two months before she can start running again. Her plan in the meantime? Potentially purchasing an ElliptiGO, an outdoor elliptical trainer—although she’s not sure what to wear (“cycling clothes or running clothes?”) and is pretty sure she’ll look ridiculous riding through Boulder. “I’m going to take that thing up to Ward!” she joked about one of area’s tough climbs.

“I’m due to go back to Boise to meet with the surgeons and re-evaluate where I’m at,” Dibens says. “I still don’t really know if it’s the foot or the knee that’s holding me back but I’m okay with it. As long as I can get back to some relatively pain-free running I don’t care if I have to wait nine months. My goal is Kona 2013, so right now I can be patient.”
