Americans Jordan Jones and Amy Bevilacqua took the wins at today’s New York City Triathlon.

A little taste of the crowds and atmosphere awaiting athletes at next months inaugural Ironman NYC was had today at the 2012 Aquaphor NYC Triathlon. The New York City triathlon comes under the 5150 events on the American calendar and starts with a super fast swim in the Hudson River. The predominantly American start list featured short course specialists with a speedy long course Aussie by the name of Pete Jacobs in the mix. Jacobs was having a training day in preparation for his Ironman Lake Placid in a couple of weeks.

Men’s Race

Holder of the fastest run split in Kona in 2011, Australian Pete Jacobs is routinely out the swim in front. Today he followed Ben Collins into T2, but a slightly slower transition and time lost off the bike saw Jacobs slip down the order and just miss out on a top-five placing. Eventual winner Jordan Jones had a slower start entering T1 down in 10th. But a blitzing bike split of 56:02 and a run of 32:32 ensured him the win over Ben Collins by a comfortable margin of 1:34. The final podium spot was taken with the fastest run split of the day. Kaleb VanOrt had time to make up after a conservative swim and run and he did it in style to run up to third with a 10K time of 30:51.

Women’s Race

Similar to men’s winner Jordan Jones, Amy Bevilacqua’s swim put her in T1 down in 10th place with work to do. With a bike split that was at least three minutes faster than any of her competitors Bevilacqua was entered T2 in first place and never looked back.  And it’s just as well she didn’t because Elizabeth Blatchford was hunting her down. With super fast transition times, likely thanks to her ITU experience, Blatchford took second place 20 seconds down from Bevilacqua and would have likely taken the win if it wasn’t for a bike penalty. Third place went to 28-year-old Jenna Parker. She was third out the swim, second off the bike and then a slower run lost her precious time and the potential top step.
