By day, the seven members of Team Dialed-N punch the clock as New York City dining and nightlife professionals. By night, they’re throwing killer parties for Manhattan’s jet set. But somehow in between, they find the time to train together, transforming seamlessly from co-workers to teammates and back again.
“At first, everyone thought I was crazy,” says Ryan Tarantino, the COO of 13th Street Entertainment and the first employee to bring up the idea of competing in a triathlon. Tarantino convinced five of his co-workers to sign up for the 2011 St. Anthony’s Triathlon, and Team Dialed-N was born.
Though small, the team has already racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. While training for their first tri, Team Dialed-N raised more than $30,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; teammate Madelaine Puster, 26, learned how to swim; and Tarantino, 36, lost more than 50 pounds.
The team also convinced the chefs at their company’s flagship restaurant, Brasserie Beaumarchais, to cook grilled food that would better complement their training than the traditional butter- and oil-laden French fare. (Whether the tri-friendly food makes it onto the menu remains to be seen.)
That’s a lot to be proud of, but Team Dialed-N’s proudest team moment may be winning the coed relay at Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills Triathlon in 2011.
“It was really awesome to experience something like that with the people you work with every day,” Puster says. “I’ve seen a totally different side of them.”
These days, Team Dialed-N can be found running the loop around Central Park, plotting their next relay victory and throwing top-notch post-race parties.
“In the beginning, triathlon seemed like such a foreign idea—like climbing Mount Everest,” Tarantino says. “But now it’s a lifestyle that’s made us all healthier.”
