Belgium's Marino Vanhoenacker hammered the bike and had an amazing eight and a half minute lead to start the run. Vanhoenacker struggled early in the marathon and didn't finish the race.

Australia's Mirinda "Rinny" Carfrae lost her nutrition on the bike and suffered late in the marathon.

Cave's penalty came from her attempt to pass Caroline Steffen for the lead. She went to make the pass and couldn't quite do it, which is an automatic penalty.
