Gear and nutrition ready for race day in Southern California.

Lance Armstrong on his decision to race: "This is a special race that was started a long time ago by people who probably thought they were doing something really crazy and it wouldn't take off and never be duplicated, and now people are doing it all over the world and in droves. And the second reason: for our servicemen and women. The SEALs are at the top of that chain but everyone below them is just as committed and just as passionate--they're special to me and special to a lot of people. The least I can do is come out and suffer for three hours and forty-nine minutes."

Lance and Race Director Mitch Hall share a light moment about his choice of racing apparel. Shortly before the start of the race Armstrong tweeted about his decision to wear a Speedo for the entire race: "In honor of the sports roots I've decided to rock the speedo, grape smuggler, banana hammock, etc for the whole race. #oldschool"

The tone in transition changed when Armstrong arrived.

Gearing up for the 1.2-mile ocean swim, which he tackled in a BlueSeventy Helix.

Armstrong posted a strong swim time of 25:18, but commented after the race: "I thought I was going to drown, seriously."

Armstrong opted for Giro's Air Attack, a semi-aero helmet designed to create less drag than a standard road helmet while venting more than a full-on aero option.

Armstrong registered the fastest bike split of the day, covering the 56 miles in 2:02:48.

Armstrong came into T2 a few steps behind Australia's Leon Griffin, who dropped his bike on the way to the rack.

Much of the run course is in deep sand. Armstrong commented after the race: “Whoever invented that [run course] needs to be checked out.”

Although known mostly for his cycling skills, Armstrong was most confidence in his run heading into the race. He chose not to pass Griffin on the bike for this reason. "The last few months have been a little complicated for me, so my training has been off and on," he said after the race. "The thing I've done the most is just long, long runs...3, 4, 5 hour trail runs. I looked at my power meter and halfway through I was at a 331 average and figured I don't want to go any harder anyways so I'll stay here and roll the dice on the run."

In a pre-race interview with Armstrong he mentioned the possibility of a Livestrong race series: "There has been considerable interest in a separate 'stand alone' series of endurance related events benefiting Livestrong so this is something we are actively exploring. Stay tuned."
