Book Review: Get In The Feed Zone

During the last few months, we’ve eagerly plowed our way through many of the 150 recipes in The Feed Zone Cookbook: Fast and Flavorful Food for Athletes ($24.95, Velopress.com) and can attest to the tasty results.

The cookbook is the ultimate guide for triathletes who want to support their training with delicious, wholesome food. Allen Lim, Ph.D., and chef Biju Thomas tested their eats on pro cyclists at the Tour de France to come up with recipes that are nutrient-packed with performance in mind.

Each of the recipes uses minimal ingredients that you probably already have in the house, and they’re quick enough for weekday meals. Feed Zone includes plenty of no-fuss breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes, but it truly triumphs with its inclusion of portable foods for rides (read: not sugary gels), pre- and post-workout fueling suggestions, timesaving kitchen techniques and gluten-free and vegetarian alternatives to most dishes. Be sure to check out Levi Leipheimer’s favorite “Biju’s Oatmeal”—filled with brown sugar, banana, nuts and molasses—and “Allen’s Rice Cakes” for an on-the-bike snack with sticky rice, bacon, eggs and brown sugar.
