Renowned for its health benefits and satisfying flavor, Hummus, a traditional Middle Eastern chickpea spread, is low in calories, high in protein and makes a convenient, versatile snack.


We loved the creamy texture and smooth taste of the Mediterranean-style flavor of Tribe, which featured olive oil and paprika on top of traditional hummus. While this all-natural option was our favorite from the staff taste test, it also had the most calories per serving (70) and the most sodium (120 mg). $2.99,

Try it: Mix into an Alfredo sauce over pasta to lower the calorie count; use it as a dip for sliced bell peppers.

Cedar’s named this flavor “zesty lemon,” and the title is spot on—this hummus has a robust lemon flavor. And it’s no wonder—the ingredients include lemon peel, lemon zest and lemon oil. Each serving contains 60 calories and just 85 mg of sodium. $3.99,

Try it: Punch up your salad’s flavor by replacing dressing with hummus; plunge in some pita chips.

Fresh ‘n Nova

Made with raw chickpeas, Fresh ‘n Nova’s red pepper variety has a subtle pepper flavor. Each serving contains 43 calories (the lowest in this review) and 106 mg of sodium. $3.99,

Try it: Replace the mayonnaise in a wrap or sandwich; serve with a side of cucumbers and carrots.
