New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty and the United States’ Liz Lyles earned the titles at the 2013 Ironman 70.3 Boise triathlon in Idaho. The 70.3 is one of the most unique races on the circuit, with an afternoon start time and unpredictable weather (a few pros went as far as to race in wetsuits on the bike last year to try to stay warm). This year’s version featured warm temperatures with highs in the 80s.

Men’s Race
Australia’s Josh Amberger kicked off the afternoon with the fastest 1.2-mile swim time of 23:49. Ironman 70.3 St. George winner Brent McMahon (CAN) and Docherty, who finished third at Rev3 Quassy six days ago, followed a minute later. At the 16-mile mark of the bike, Docherty had taken over the lead with Amberger following close behind. The two stayed out front for the 56 miles and came into T2 with a 90-second lead over McMahon and more than three minutes on Canada’s Trevor Wurtele. Docherty held a solid pace out front, while McMahon passed Amberger and tried to catch up to his fellow Olympian. He made a small dent in Docherty’s lead, but couldn’t keep that pace up. Docherty ran a 1:15:20 half marathon to claim the Boise victory in 3:52:55. McMahon cruised in for second with a time of 3:54:36. Amberger held off the faster runners behind him to earn third.

Women’s Race
American Malaika Homo posted the fastest swim split at 28:21. She held a commanding lead into T1 with Olesya Prystayko (UKR) and Jennifer Luebke (USA) following. Jackson started the bike 2:23 back of Homo, but quickly found her way to the front of the bike. Jackson extended her lead throughout the 56-mile ride and started the run with a 3:32 gap over Liz Lyles (USA). Given Jackson’s recent success, it looked like the win would be hers for the taking, but the race was far from over. Coming off of a second-place finish at the tough Rev3 Quassy race less than a week ago, Jackson didn’t have her usual run legs. Lyles posted a 1:23:38 to eliminate Jackson’s lead and earn the 4:28:37 win. Jackson earned second at 4:32:42.
