Australia’s Greg Bennett and Canada’s Angela Naeth posted strong bike times at Sunday’s Ironman 70.3 Buffalo Springs Lake to earn the victories.
Australia’s Josh Amberger led Boulder’s James Seear out of the 1.2-mile swim at just under 20 minutes. New Zealand’s Terenzo Bozzone was just under a minute later, with Tim Reed (AUS) and Bennett following not far behind. Bennett earned the top spot to start the run thanks to an impressive 2:07:49 bike split. He used his ITU speed to hold the top spot to the finish line. His 1:18:03 half marathon gave him the 3:48:58 victory. Reed posted the fastest run time of the day (1:17:25) to finish second. Bozzone claimed the third spot.
2012 London Olympian (and wife of Greg Bennett) Laura Bennett was the first out the water for the women with a time of 21:07. Fellow super swimmer Amanda Stevens (USA) was 18 seconds back, with Amy Marsh (USA) rounding out the top three into T1. Naeth kept the damage on the swim to a minimum and headed toward transition just under three minutes back of the leaders. Naeth shined on the 56-mile bike leg, earning a lead of over five minutes to start the 13.1-mile run. She held steady on the run to earn the victory in 4:16:08. She won the TriRock Philadelphia Triathlon last week, making this her second victory in seven days. Bennett had a slower bike split to come into T2 in sixth position. She turned in a fast run split to come back up to second at the finish line. Marsh, who is from Texas, earned third.
