Great Britain’s Tim Don and Australia’s Melissa Hauschildt took the titles at the Intermedix Ironman 70.3 Augusta. The race is located along the Savannah River in Augusta, Ga., and both Don and Hauschildt were in the lead or lead group off the bike before running their way to victory.
In the men’s race, the point-to-point 1.2-mile swim with the current in the Savannah River saw speedy swim times, with Don out of the water first in a time of 19:10, with German Nils Frommhold and Aussie Paul Matthews on his heels. Aussie Richie Cunningham and Canadian Jordan Bryden exited just 20 seconds back, and Ukraine’s Viktor Zyemstev was less than a minute off the lead.
On the hilly, one-loop 56-mile bike ride though Georgia and into the countryside of South Carolina, the men’s top four run splits were all within three seconds of each other, with former 70.3 Augusta champ Maxim Kriat (UKR) having the fastest of 2:10:10, but with his slower swim, he entered T2 30 seconds behind the lead group of Don, Matthews and Frommhold.
On the two-loop, 13.1-mile run through downtown Augusta, former ITU world champion Don quickly took the lead on the run and never looked back, taking the win with a blazing 1:11:42 half-marathon. Former 70.3 Augusta winner Zyemstev, who started the run two minutes behind the lead group, worked his way through the men’s field into second place, and—after the third- through sixth-place men ran together for a big chunk of the run, Frommhold pulled ahead to take third.
In the women’s race, first out of the down-river swim was Emma-Kate Lidbury of Great Britain in a time of 20:42, followed closely by Svetlana Blazevic (SER). About 20 seconds back were Miranda Tomenson (CAN) and two-time Ironman 70.3 world champion Hauschildt.
The recent 70.3 world champion powered on the bike solo to a field-leading 2:19:23 bike split then took off on the run, her specialty. Lidbury entered T2 six minutes behind Hauschildt, American Hallie Blunck was eight minutes back, followed by Ruth Brennan Morrey (USA) 8:30 off the lead.
On the half-marathon, Hauschildt put in a solid 1:18:59 run to take the title, while Brennan Morrey ran her way into second and Lidbury held on to third.
