Officials say a man had a heart attack during the swimming portion of Sunday’s HITS Endurance triathlon in Naples.

It all happened around 7:00 a.m. Sunday at Vanderbilt Beach. Officials say 57-year-old Don Green of Naples was taken out on a stretcher and was later pronounced dead. On Monday, neighbors who knew Green say he had several doubts about swimming in the event.

“I’m just trying to keep it together and I just can’t believe it. [It's] like your heart is ripped out and you’re empty inside,” said neighbor Phyllis Kutach. Neighbors and friends describe Green as a one-of-a-kind guy. ”This is a real loss to the neighborhood,” said Kutach. It’s a loss they’ll never forget.

The triathlete participated in one of Naples biggest events of the year – the HITS Endurance triathlon at Vanderbilt Beach. It was in the swimming portion of Sunday’s event that Green was found unresponsive in the water.
