Italy’s Daniel Fontana and the United States’ Linsey Corbin earned the early-season Ironman victories Sunday in Los Cabos, Mexico.
Great Britain’s Stephen Bayliss earned an early two-minute lead out of the water thanks to a 45:37 swim. American TJ Tollakson was second out of the water (47:40), with Fontana and Jan Van Verkel (CHE) following close behind. Fontana quickly tracked down Bayliss and overtook the top spot. Fontana along with Van Berkel, Bayliss and Tollakson made up a strong front group through the front half of the bike. Eventually Van Berkel broke away and established a solid lead. Van Berkel’s 4:36:25 bike split gave him more than a three-minute lead over Bayliss, Fontana, Domenico Passuello (ITA) and Tollakson coming into T2. Despite the large lead, it was evident from the start of the marathon that he likely wouldn’t hold the top spot to the finish line. As Van Berkel faded, Fontana excelled. Fontana’s 2:55:06 marathon gave him the victory in 8:26:15. Baylisss finished second at 8:32:19, with Passuello rounding out the top three.
Americans Hayley Chura and Katy Blakemore dominated the 2.4-mile swim, heading into T1 after 48 minutes of work. Two main contenders, Carrie Lester (AUS) and Corbin, started the bike with some work to do to catch the super swimmers. It didn’t take long for a determined Lester to ride to the front of the race. Lester rode alone out front for the majority of the 112 miles, with Corbin following in second for most of the day. At the end of the ride Lester held a two-minute advantage over Corbin, with the third-place rider trailing 12 minutes back. Corbin slowly clawed away at Lester’s advantage, and took the lead at about the midway point of the marathon. Corbin cruised through the 26.2 miles in 3:12:03, giving her the 9:16:43 win. American Lisa Ribes posted the fastest run of the day (3:02:43) to finish second. Lester earned the final podium spot.
