Although we haven’t been to—and hadn’t even heard of—Jekyll Island, Ga., until today, we’re adding the Turtle Crawl Triathlon to our triathlon to-do list. Held on Jekyll, one of Georgia’s Golden Isles, the Turtle Crawl Triathlon and NestFest offers both a sprint and Olympic-distance option as well as a 5K on May 17, 2014.

Now in its 12th year, the race serves as a tradition to help launch the annual sea turtle nesting season, and part of the race registration fees aid research and rehab for endangered sea turtles. At the finish line staff from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center release a rehabilitated sea turtle. (I mean, come on—who doesn’t love sea turtles?)

What: 12th Annual Turtle Crawl Triathlon

When: Saturday, May 17, 2014 (registration deadline is May 9)

Where: Great Dunes Park – Jekyll Island, Georgia
