Canada’s Lionel Sanders and Australia’s Melissa Hauschildt earned the victories against tough fields at today’s Ironman 70.3 Racine in Wisconsin.

Men’s Race
Kevin Collington (USA) led a group of seven, including Americans Andrew Starykowicz and Tim O’Donnell, out of the water at 24:21. Sanders came out of the swim three minutes back with work to do. As he does in every race, Starykowicz took control on the bike and rode away from the rest of the field. Starkyowicz’s gap stood at eight minutes over Sanders, O’Donnell and a few others. Though Starykowicz looked solid out front, he couldn’t match the speed of Sanders. The Canadian turned in a 1:09:36 half marathon to take the win in 3:45:55. Starykowicz easily held onto second, finishing at 3:46:37. Australia’s Peter Robertson finished third.

Women’s Race
Former ITU athlete Helle Frederiksen (DEN) came out of the water at 25:32, with Malaika Homo (USA), Valentina Carvallo (CHI) and Hauschildt chasing. Frederiksen maintained her top spot through the first half of the bike, but was taken over by Hauschildt before T2. Hauschildt’s gap stood at 17 seconds over Frederiksen to start the run. The two-time Ironman 70.3 world champion extended her lead from there, turning a 1:20:04 half marathon to earn the 4:11:51 win. Frederiksen earned the runner-up spot, with Lauren Barnett (USA) finishing in third.
