Great Britain’s Tim Don and Canada’s Heather Wurtele each continued to establish themselves as top athletes at the 70.3 distance with big victories against tough fields at Ironman 70.3 Monterrey in Mexico on Sunday. With a total prize purse of $50,000, several professionals chose to kick-off their seasons in Monterrey, which is just over 100 miles south of the Texas border.

Don was in the mix through the swim (22:49) and the bike (2:04:37), and then used his race-best half-marathon (1:12:46) to excel past the field, giving him the victory in 3:42:53. Trevor Wurtele (CAN) turned in a stellar all-around performance to claim second at 3:43:53. Matt Chrabot (USA) narrowly edged out Sylvain Sudrie (FRA) to finish in third at 3:44:37.

In the women’s race, Wurtele used a 26:31 swim, a 2:16:49 bike and a 1:22:09 half-marathon to claim the dominant victory in 4:08:19. With Wurtele blowing the competition away on the bike, the rest of the women were left to battle for the remaining podium spots on the run. Denmark’s Camilla Pedersen finished in second at 4:12:05, with three-time Ironman world champion Mirinda Carfrae (AUS) running her way from fifth off of the bike to third at the finish line with a race-best 1:20:48 half-marathongiving her the final podium spot in 4:15:11.
