Australia’s Craig Alexander and Switerland’s Caroline Steffen turned in strong performances in Geelong to take their first wins of the new year. Alexander’s win was thanks to a blazing run time of 1:11:57, while Steffen dominated the women’s field on the second leg of the race with a bike time of 2:20:38.

Despite the caliber of some of the names in this weekend’s Ironman 70.3 Geelong, the race’s placement at the end of many athlete’s off seasons means that it is possible for lesser-known athletes to take the victories.

For the first time, there will be a U.S. Pro Championship for the Ironman 70.3 Series. The race, and prize money of $75,000, will be open to professional triathletes from around the world, not just Americans. The race will take place in Houston, Texas at the newly re-named Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 Texas on Sunday, April 24.

The World Triathlon Corporation has announced that it is adding another half-Ironman distance race to the Ironman series. The Ironman 70.3 Centrair Tokoname Japan triathlon will take place September 19, 2010 and is just one of several new 70.3 races making their debut in 2010.

Confirmed athletes include Sweden’s Bjorn Andersson, Luxembourg’s Dirk Bockel, Spain’s Eneko Llanos, Germany’s Faris Al-Sultan, Great Britain’s Fraser Cartmell, Australia’s Joe Gambles, the United States’ Jordan Rapp, Germany’s Maik Twelsiak, Switzerland’s Oliver Marceau, Great Britain’s Phil Graves, Denmark’s Rasmus Henning, South Africa’s Raynard Tissink and Belgium’s Rutger Beke.
