I just hope eventually some of these guys can get near the top in either Ironman or ITU events. Haven’t had an american on the podium in a while at Kona. The Aussies are looking pretty dominant – not just macca and crowie, but their up and coming guys too like Pete Jacobs (2nd at Kona). The Brownlee’s and Gomez are dominating ITU. We need some stars and stripes on the podium!

I wish I could swim like that. After seeing the couple xterra’s that he did last year I realized he’s quite a swimmer, at least by pro-triathlete standards (versus Olympic swimmer standards).

I got a couple of lessons at the YMCA and they helped hugely, even though there is still a long way to go! Teaching myself was not working with the mental kick of keeping head down in the water, relaxing, swim stroke, breathing to the side…a coach can help with that in minutes. Then you have to put the hard work in yourself.

From my personal experience, I tried the self taught approach first and wasn’t having much success. Since then, I have started working with a coach and in 3 or 4 sessions have seen huge improvements in my confidence and abilities. I would highly recommend getting a few lessons with a coach, the cost isn’t that great and it should pay off quickly.

@Gordon. Jealousy? No. I would never have been fast enough for the Olympics at any stage in my life. I look forward to seeing all of the competitors each and every time the Olympics come around. I have no doubt that if Matt qualifies he deserves it from a competitive standpoint. He is without a doubt very fast. My comments were more directed at the attitude. Again i will point out that perhaps he should stick to print interviews. I’m still of the opinion that Olympians should be ambassadors for both their sport and country. Cranking on about how much you deserve something because you gave up more than other guys is ridiculous at best. Whining rarely plays well on the world stage.

Great summary. This is why “diets” don’t work. Rules rub against our emotional behavior. When working with weight loss clients I have used the Readiness-to-Change-Ruler developed by the work of Prochaska and Zimmerman. Eating to achieve weight loss success is not a Monday through Friday adventure with cheat days on Saturday and Sunday. You must believe in the process and finding the uniqueness of your metabolism and relationship with food.
