Photographer Benoit Beauchamp provides recaps, photos and results from the Deca-Ironman in Monterrey, Mexico.

The athletes at the front of the pack, Ferenc Szonyi and Matej Markovic, have just started their marathon on the fifth day of competition. Matej Markovic continues to hold the overall lead. Here are the combined times of the top-four athletes:

1. Matej Markovic 10:28:23, 10:37:35, 10:43:10, 11:01:26, Total – 42:50:34

2. Pascal Joly 10:56:06, 11:43:03, 11:36:34, 11:31:06, Total -45:40:00

3. Ferenc Szonyi 10:46:45, 11:38:57, 11:26:34, 11:51:18,
Total – 45:43:34

4. Beñat Zubilaga 10:52:50, 11:51:03, 11:18:40, 11:56:38, Total – 45:58:11

There is now a clear divide between the stronger and weaker athletes. While some athletes are starting to significantly slow, there are a few who are actually picking up the pace.
Yesterday, Andreas Karall pulled out of the race. So far today, we have seen three athletes call it a day with hopes to return to the starting line tomorrow. These athletes include Michael Gaertner from Germany, Yves Beauchamp from Canada and Suraya Oliver from England. While these athletes will be unable to earn the Deca-Ironman designation, they still have a chance to accomplish a great feat by completing multiple Ironmans in a short amount of time.

Photographer Benoit Beauchamp provides recaps, photos and results from the Deca-Ironman in Monterrey, Mexico.

With three days in the books, athletes have seven more grueling days to complete. Last night, Matej Markovic from Slovenia was once again the first to cross the finish line with a time of 10:43:10, giving him a combined time of 31:49:08. He was followed by Ferenc Szonyi from Hungary and Beñat Zubilaga from Spain. Now on day four, we’ve seen some athletes starting to slow down. The athletes are aware of how much 10 Ironmans can affect their body, and they want to make sure that they have some energy reserved for the final two to three days.

In addition to the Deca-Ironman, there are four other athletes working to complete a variation of the event. Marcel Heinig of Germany is aiming to complete 50 Olympic-distance events in 10 days. So far he has kept on the necessary pace of completing at least five races per day. Additionally, Silvia And one from Mexico is doing one half-Ironman per day for the 10-day period. Her daughter, Gisele Andonie is aiming to complete an Olympic-distance triathlon for each of the 10 days. Finally, we have Arthur Puckin of England. Puckin is working towards completing an Ironman every other day over the 10 days in hopes of completing four Ironmans. He is the oldest competitor out here at 71-years-old.

Each participant of the Deca-Ironman aims to complete one Ironman everyday, for 10 days. Each day, all of the racers head over to the University of Nuevo Leon. Once athletes complete the 2.4 miles of swimming, they take to the bike and ride over to the local track about 1.2 miles away. The track is located in the Parque Ninos Heroes. While the park’s original purpose was ecological, it has now been transformed into an area for sports. It’s like an academy of sport for the young Mexican athletes from all around the country.

Once at the park, athletes must complete 93 laps around the track to obtain the 180 km of riding. After the bike, athletes run the opposite direction around the same track. The 26.2 marathon is made up of 22 laps.

Day one saw 18 athletes start the event. That number quickly dropped to 17 as one athlete was forced to drop out due to a collarbone fracture he suffered after hitting a duck on his bike at the 38km mark.

Now at day three of the race, the leader is Matej Markovic of Slovenia with a two-day combined time of 21:06:08. Second place belongs to Ferenc Szonyi from Hungary with a total time of 22:25:02.
